The recession hasn’t caused the problem of homelessness, but  it has lifted its awareness. In the U.S., one child in 50 is currently homeless. Maybe now we can apply some stimulus projects to the problem and get our people off the streets.

Recession Increasing Interest In Homelessness

This blog entry talks about many of the pitfalls of recent US government decisions regarding post-secondary education funding. I fear that Canada is falling into the same trap. Being a college instructor, I know first-hand that funding is down over the last few years. My college has been utilizing deficit financing for three years running. Programs are disappearing and classroom sizes are multiplying (my classes have gone from 32 students in 2001 to 60 students for 2009). Canada needs innovation to move past the natural resources based economy of the present. That innovation will either come from our universities and colleges or be imported from economies that have made Education a priority.

As I have alluded to before, Rachel Maddow is an amateur mixologist, specializing in period cocktails. She was on Jimmy Fallon last night mixing up a Bijou.

There is also a great clip following of Jimmy attempting to numerous promo spots after having a few large gulps of the cocktail!

Last night’s episode two of The Great Food Revolution introduced me to a new term – Locavore. Basically a locavore is one who eats food that is grown or produced locally within 50, 100, or 150 miles. The idea being that it encourages local farmers to keep their land in production and cuts down on the greenhouse gases used to bring produce from halfway across the world.

Michelle Obama, the wonderful FLOTUS, has taken this principle to heart. Today, she broke ground on the White House vegetable garden.

This is the main reason that I want to sell my condo and get a townhouse. I want a backyard!

What do you think of becoming a locavore?
